ABOUT
Xiangmei Su is a multimedia artist originally from China and currently based in Vancouver, Canada. Her interdisciplinary practice involves painting, photography, video, and installation, with thread as a symbol of memory, migration, and the invisible connections that link people and place.
Su began her formal art education at the University of British Columbia, where she earned a BA in Visual Arts. Since then, her work has been exhibited extensively in both China and Canada. Her debut solo exhibition, The Wind, held at the Changshu Art Museum in 2012, marked the beginning of a deeply personal exploration through material, form, and cultural memory. Her solo exhibitions at R Space in Vancouver and the Seymour Art Gallery in North Vancouver continued her exploration of the evolution of her identity over time.
As an artist-in-residence at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in Vancouver, Su created Intangible Thread – Part I and Part II, two site-responsive installations reflecting on diasporic experience and cultural continuity. In the years that followed, she held solo exhibitions at Lipont Gallery and Canton-Sardine Gallery, foregrounding themes of community, memory, and cross-cultural dialogue. Most recently, she took part in Neighbours, a two-person exhibition at the West Vancouver Art Museum.
Su has published four catalogues of her work. In addition to her artistic practice, she delivered a TEDx Talk in 2020 titled Becoming Who I Am, and in 2022, she served as an exhibition advisor for the West Vancouver Community Arts Council's Jury for Exhibitions at the Kay Meek Arts Centre.
